We are a nation of weekend warriors and working on our houses is one thing we love to do. If you are part of the DIY crew, good for you. When it comes to your roof, however, you really need to think twice before trying to do leak repair on your own.
Unless something has banged into your roof and cause obvious damage, water leaks will rarely occur where the actual problem is. Many homeowner’s make the mistake of climbing into the attic and looking for the leak point. Once they find the stain, they then go up onto the roof and look for the problem. When they can’t find it, they just do a general repair in the area and wait for the next storm. When the leak re-occurs, the frustration grows.
Water is tricky stuff. A roof is a multilayered barrier system. When water penetrates the first layer, it rarely penetrates the remaining ones. Instead, it travels across the layers until it eventually finds the point of least resistance. It will then penetrate at that point and repeat the process till it eventually leaks into your attic or ceiling. Water may travel, 10, 20 feet or more and rarely in a straight line. This is why you should have an experienced roofer take a look at it instead of wasting your weekend “chasing the drip.”
Most people don’t know a good roofer from a bad one because they understandably don’t have experience with a lot of roofers. We don’t ask you to trust us. We guarantee our work in writing so you don’t have to.
