Hate paying for roof repairs? Fear the thought of paying to replace your roof? Then take care of it! One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make in Southern California is to improperly ventilate their roofs. In fairness, most don’t know they should be taking steps to get the air moving.
Why do I need to ventilate the roof if it rains so rarely here? Well, rain isn’t the only form of water your roof deals with. The average roof deals with over four pounds of water vapor a day. This water vapor is accumulating in the air space under your roof and above your ceiling. If you have good air circulation, it isn’t a problem. If you don’t, it can rot your roof from the inside out and cause all kinds of health problems do to mold and mildew problems.
So, what do you do? First, remove all boxes and obstructions from the wall vents in attic or crawl space. This will create a natural heat exit for the air space and allow air to move in and out with the heat. Make sure the vents are open! You can close them in winter when you want to keep the heat in.
To really save your roof, you might consider the installation of a solar vent or fan. As the name suggests, these fans are powered by the sun and either push or suck air out of the space below your roof. A simple product that can add 5 to 10 years to your roof.
Much like a problem with plumbing, a roof problem is a crisis you often need dealt with immediately. You can make bad decisions when you are rushed and stressed. Don’t! Take the time to pick the right roofer. We’re licensed, bonded, insured and guarantee our work in writing.
