You’re relaxing on the couch one day. As you are staring upwards, you notice a stain on the ceiling. Groan, a roof leak.
If you see discoloration on your ceiling, don’t immediately assume the worst. Many leaks are localized and can be repaired with minimal effort and costs. Finding the cause of the leak is the first problem. There are a couple of things to look for. Many homes in Southern California have skylights. If you do, look for the closest one. The flashing that creates a water tight seal between the frame of the skylight and the roof often is a problem area. If it isn’t that, take a look on the roof for any roof penetrations such as pipes in the area as the flashing for those can also be a problem. If nothing is readily apparent, call a roofer.
Watch out for bait and switch roofers. Most roofers are ethical, but there are a few bad apples out there.
