If there is one area where we see roof problems start over and over, it is with gutters. You’re gutters are the primary water removal system for your roof. Maintain them and you can add years to the life of your roof. Fail to maintain them and you can take years off.
Gutters need to be cleaned. There isn’t really any secret about that. If they are plugged with dead leaves and what have you, they can back up and create pools of water. If water ends up flooding back up into your roof, it is bad news. Even if it just pours over onto one section of wall, it can quickly eat away the siding. This is particularly true if it is stucco. Remember, flowing water carved out the Grand Canyon. Keep your gutters clean!
A second problem with gutters can be the pitch. Gutters move a lot of water and material. If they are not supported correctly, one end can droop. If this occurs, the slope of the gutter can be changed and water can back up. This will result in the expensive problems mentioned previously. Take a look at your gutters and make sure they all look like the slope correctly. If you are not sure, run a level across them or get up on a ladder and run some water down them.
